Why do the SRA refer a case to the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal?

The SRA now have wider powers to impose fixed penalties and they ave always had the power to sanction a firm or individual without prosecuting. More serious matters are sent to the Tribunal and can result in a range of sanctions including removal from the roll of solicitors. Understanding the referral criteria is important.
